COACHING FAQ
Clear answers about who we coach, how the process works, and what you can expect from a Move Up coach.
If you are motivated to improve your fitness, health, or cycling ability, you are likely a strong candidate for coaching. Coaching works best when you want more purpose and structure in the activities supporting your goals. Some athletes enjoy a highly detailed plan built around precise power targets and timing. Others want enough structure to keep progressing without making every ride feel restrictive. We sometimes describe these as the “engineer” and the “surfer.” Most athletes fall somewhere between the two. A good coaching relationship adapts the training to the athlete—not the athlete to a rigid coaching system.
Yes. Move Up coaching is delivered remotely, and we work with athletes across the United States. Kansas City is our home, but athletes do not need to live locally, participate in local events, or belong to Move Up Cycling Club. Training, activity review, plan adjustments, and regular communication all happen online.
Our primary experience includes gravel, road, criterium, mountain bike, cyclocross, and general endurance cycling. We also help athletes incorporate strength training, running, and other complementary activities when they support the athlete’s cycling goals. For highly specialized disciplines such as track racing or enduro, we will discuss your needs honestly and determine whether someone on our coaching team is the right fit.
No. Roughly one-quarter of our athletes race rarely or not at all. A goal gives training direction, but it does not need to involve a race. Athletes may want to improve their fitness, prepare for a challenging ride, become more comfortable in a group, build consistency, regain confidence, or maintain their health while balancing a demanding life.
Yes. We have extensive experience working with both junior and masters athletes. For juniors, coaching is most appropriate when the athlete is interested in riding consistently, willing to follow an age-appropriate plan, and has goals they are excited to pursue. We consider school, family life, recovery, development, and long-term enjoyment—not just race results. Masters athletes have been central to Move Up since the beginning, and we regularly help athletes manage training alongside work, family, recovery needs, and changing schedules.
Absolutely. You do not need to join Move Up Cycling Club or change teams to work with a Move Up coach. We coach athletes from different states, clubs, and teams—including athletes who compete against Move Up Cycling Club locally. We value good competition and encourage athletes to remain connected to the teams and communities that matter to them.
Yes. We coach individual athletes who race as part of teams, and we can also work with teams on coordinated training, athlete development, race preparation, and team strategy. Team arrangements are built case by case because the appropriate structure depends on the team’s size, goals, calendar, and level of support needed.
You may request a specific coach when you inquire. Coach availability varies, but we will honor that preference whenever possible or discuss waitlist options with you. If you do not have a preference, we will recommend a coach based on your goals, discipline, experience, personality, and support needs. The goal is not simply to assign an available coach. It is to create a productive long-term fit.
The most valuable part of coaching is access to an experienced coach who understands your goals, reviews what is actually happening, and adjusts the plan accordingly. Coaching includes:
Your coach performs a detailed review and updates your plan weekly. We may make adjustments more frequently when a key workout, changing schedule, illness, travel, fatigue, or athlete feedback requires it. You are not limited to one adjustment per week. The weekly review establishes the regular rhythm, while communication helps us respond when circumstances change.
Slack is our primary communication platform. You can message your coach whenever a question, schedule change, or training issue comes up. Coaches maintain normal personal downtime, but you can generally expect a response within 24 hours unless your coach has communicated otherwise. TrainingPeaks is used for workout instructions and activity notes. Longer conversations and back-and-forth questions should happen in Slack.
You need a device or application that can record your activities and sync them with TrainingPeaks. Garmin Connect, Wahoo, and Strava are common options. A heart-rate monitor is optional but strongly recommended. A power meter is also optional. We encourage athletes to invest in one when it supports their goals and they are ready to use the information—not simply because cycling marketing says they need one.
Yes. Adapting training to real life is one of the main reasons athletes hire a coach. We have worked with helicopter pilots completing seven consecutive 12-hour shifts, night nurses, on-call train conductors, new parents, frequent travelers, students, and athletes with constantly changing work demands. An unpredictable schedule does not prevent purposeful training. It means the plan and communication system need to be designed accordingly.
Individual coaching is $225 per month. Billing begins when you start and recurs monthly on that date. Discounts are available for junior athletes, students, and Move Up Cycling Club members. Contact us for the applicable rate.
Coaching is month to month, with no minimum term. We ask for two weeks’ notice when ending service. When possible, we recommend allowing approximately three months before evaluating the full coaching relationship. The first month involves learning how you communicate, respond to training, and manage the coaching process. The plan becomes increasingly personalized as your coach learns more about you.
We will set up billing, connect your TrainingPeaks account, confirm activity syncing, establish communication through Slack, and collect the information your coach needs to begin building your plan. Your first week usually involves more communication because everything is new. After onboarding, you and your coach will establish a regular rhythm for weekly reviews, ongoing messages, and monthly calls.
There is no pressure to begin coaching after the initial conversation. We hope it feels like a strong fit, but different athletes connect with different coaches and coaching styles. If you begin and later decide that the relationship is not working, coaching is month to month and you may stop with two weeks’ notice.
